Caning a real chair

Writer's picture: Nimble NorfolkNimble Norfolk

Following on from my instructional videos, I've made a much longer film explaining how I work on real chairs. This particular chair is curved, so there is some information on how to deal with irregular shapes as well.

A dusty brown chair with partially caned seat, pierced back, and patchy colours
The chair as it arrived in the workshop

The client started to weave the seat herself but decided part way through that she didn't want to finish it. She is happy with the finish, so all I needed to do was clean and cane it.

As you can see, the chair is a horseshoe shape with slightly rounded extensions to the side and front. A nicely proportioned piece, with architectural sweeps and curves.

The video is long, and while I've tried to give it a sensible flow we are all subject to the meanderings of my brain! There are chapter markings so you can skip to where you want to go, and obviously the standard YouTube settings let you pause, replay, and adjust playback speed to suit your needs.

It doesn't cover everything, but it does walk you through some of my thought processes, and things you might like to consider when tackling a real chair.

Good luck, and happy caning!
